Can't log into Library databases?

Answer

UPDATED 21 AUG 2025

USERS WITH NEW OPEN ATHENS ACCOUNTS

  • Offsite users: If you can't log in to ProQuest, EBSCO, etc., using your OA account, it's because the setup process isn't fully completed yet!
  • You can still use your library account number (until Aug 31)

COMMON REASONS FOR PROBLEMS WITH DATABASE ACCESS

  • User account group/type doesn't have remote database permissions
    • User groups that have remote database access permissions are: MCU Faculty, Staff, students (resident students of CSC, EWS, MCWAR, SAW), selected contractors, and USMC-affiliated researchers
    • If your user group is not one of the above, you don't have database access

  • Using the wrong login
    • Our databases use logins specifically issued by the Library. They are:
    1. MCU Research Library issued card/library account number
    2. MCU Research Library issued OpenAthens username/password
    3. MCU Research Library issued username/password assigned to specific schools/student groups
    4.  If it's not one of the above, it won't work
    5. Why you can't use your EDI-PI number:
      • MCU Research Library doesn't have the capability
      • EDI-PI is used with DOD-MWR Online Library, which is a separate organization and validates users via DEERS

  • Trying to access content we don't pay for
    • Sometimes users try to access content that the MCU Research Library does not pay for/subscribe to
    • If we don't pay for access, you won't be able to access it using your Library account

  • User account expired or Temporary account expired
    • Expired accounts can't access databases, they are removed from the authorized user list
    • Sometimes we issue temporary accounts - they are not intended for permanent use and are periodically deactivated

  • User account removed from system
    • Expired accounts are removed appx. 30-45 days after account expiration, in order to remain in compliance with PII guidelines
    • Example: Accounts for MCU students who graduated May/June 2025 have been removed from the system (unless student retained eligibility AND made arrangements to convert to another user group)
